Finding your article was timely! I looked at an Hermes used/like new dressage saddle this afternoon. I may try a ride in it, however, I'm drawn to a Balance International saddle. I'm using their general purpose jump model as I search for a used Balance dressage saddle, or do the homework they require to order new. My TB does great in the Balance saddle, and I want to stick with what works! I would welcome your comment on the Balance dressage saddle. I'm an intermediate rider that wants to become good enough to enter a recognized show! My horse is currently at first level. I work with a trainer, the president of the Central WA Dressage Society. A wonderful teacher!

Great Question!

You would need to look up the regulations as it is a personal choice to declare yourself a professional. Or better yet contact the governing body and let me know the answer. My view is a professional derives more than incidental income through horses.

I view a working student as an apprentice learning the trade. Often a stipend is offered to working student to help them cover food and incidentals. In my view that would allow them to show as an amateur.

If on the other hand they are teaching lessons for income or training horses for others and getting paid at another farm on their free time, I would say they should declare themselves a pro.

Best regards,

Jeff Johnson

Hello,

My name is Frances Clow, and I am interested in the working student position.

I grew up riding and successfully competing in dressage. I graduated from Stanford University in 2008 but am from the East Coast originally. I won the 2nd level Northern California JR/YR championship in 2006 as well as placing in the top three several years in a row at Lendon Gray's JR/YR festival. I have competed up to third level and consistently achieved scores in the high 60's and even low 70's. After graduation, I began working in the financial industry of New York City. I recently quit my job in economic consulting to pursue my dream, riding professionally.

I have taught lessons to adults and kids alike, was a senior instructor at a riding overnight camp (Pony Farm in Temple, NH), have schooled many horses at the barns I've ridden at, and am knowledgeable about all areas of horse care and health. Most of all, I'm a hard worker and am willing to do anything to get back to my dream.

Please let me know if you still have a working student position available. I'd love to answer any questions you might have.

Thank you,
Frances Clow
